过年给孩子压岁钱是中国人过年的一个习俗,图个吉利.不过给压岁钱还很有讲究,得给新钱.最近,专程换新钱的人在银行里排起了长队,有的公司也应员工要求在发年终奖金时准备了崭新的50和100元面值的人民币.

给压岁钱是中国特有的风俗,一般是长辈给晚辈,据说压岁钱可以压住邪祟,因"岁"与"祟"谐音,得到压岁钱的孩子可以平平安安度过一岁.英文中没有对应的表达,gift money 是根据"压岁钱" 意思的翻译过来的,即"将钱作为礼物送给孩子".
